On a recent scroll through Instagram, I stopped at Rachel's post. Her words spoke to me - the life of a functional drinker. She talked about how she had a successful career, but would drink almost every night.
She wrote a book to help her when she was struggling. Her hope is to help others going through the similar story as she did. Read or listen to her memoir-meets-self-help book Functional on Amazon.
Learn a little more about Rachel...
What’s your journey with sobriety?
I decided to try a Sober September after years of daily drinking. I was tired of hangovers and arguments about my drinking with my husband. That experiment has now turned into over seven years without alcohol, and it's truly improved my life.
Why did you write the book?
I wrote my book Functional, which addresses Functional Alcoholism, because I did not see books like it in the marketplace. While many sobriety memoirs focus on extreme rock bottom stories, my experience was different- I had a husband, good job, and cute pets, but struggled with nightly drinking and couldn’t stop.
How can your book help others?
Functional combines memoir and self-help and offers examining questions for high performers seeking freedom from alcohol. The book covers moderation, 30-day abstinence, and ways to tell others you're not drinking. It presents comprehensive information on tapering off alcohol and redefining personal identity in sobriety. Finally, the book discusses different recovery options, including AA and sober coaching, and helps readers build a personalized plan for recovery.
Anything else that you want to add? Before I quit drinking, I doubted life could be better, but being alcohol-free has brought me more fun and happiness than ever before.
Thanks Rachel for letting us bring your book to our community of non drinkers!
Notes from Mama with a Mocktail: I was a functional drinker of alcohol. I knew I had a bad relationship with alcohol, but to me, there wasn't anything really wrong with my almost daily drinking. It was just part of what I did and who I was. That was until I had a life changing moment where I said something had to be different. I understand what Rachel was talking about - her story resonated with me.
